Refugee and Immigration: English Conversation Team

Refugee & Immigration Direct Service
The English Conversation Team currently has two initiatives in which volunteers work with immigrants and refugees on English conversation skills:

1. Columbia University Impact program: Volunteers supplement a structured English language program by facilitating small group discussions to enhance conversation skills. This program requires a 12 week commitment. The fall session has begun, but there should be additional opportunities in the winter/spring. The classes take place in the evenings and are located uptown from the Columbia campus, accessible by the #1 subway. If you have questions or want to learn more you may contact BJ member Peggy Samuels, psamuels@drew.edu, who is the BJ liaison to the Columbia program.

2. Riverside Language Program: Volunteers work with small groups of students who engage in conversation with each other as well as the volunteer. This program takes place weekday mornings at BJ. Currently, we do not have openings for additional volunteers; however openings may be available in the future. If you are interested in learning more please sign up and a team leader will be in touch.

This is a subgroup of BJ's Refugee and Immigration Committee. When you join, we will also add you to the general list and encourage you to attend larger committee meetings. If you are interested in the Refugee and Immigration Committee but are undecided on your focus of interest, contact committee Co-Chair Elaine Klein, elainekleinteacher@gmail.com, to learn more.

We're sorry.
