Refugee and Immigration: Job Readiness Team

Refugee & Immigration Direct Service
This Team engages our volunteers in a three-pronged initiative designed to assist newly-arrived Refugee, Asylee and Documented Immigrant students who are concluding their English Language studies at a valued BJ partner organization, Riverside Language Program [RLP].

(1) As part of RLP’s English Language curriculum, BJ volunteers will join in conducting small group workshops throughout the school year designed to highlight the ways in which students can best prepare for entrance into the local job market at a level appropriate to: their English language proficiency, their previous job experience and their current economic needs. BJ volunteers will be trained to facilitate these workshops.

(2) Outside of the RLP curriculum and classroom, and at the request of individual RLP students, our volunteers—after appropriate BJ and RLP training— will meet one-on-one with students who have graduated from RLP, and mentor these graduates in personalizing their resume-building, interview and other skills that are specific to their own job goals. We focus not only on how they can best utilize their individual strengths and job experience, but also on referring graduates to additional resources and training opportunities in order to qualify for the positions they seek.

(3) Our volunteers stay in touch with these RLP Graduates and will refer those who are Refugees/Asylees directly to BJ’s Job Placement Team when these graduates are qualified to seek/obtain employment. Other RLP graduates, who possess documented immigrant status, will be referred to other appropriate resources for their job placement services.

Our volunteers meet periodically throughout the School Year, both as a Team and with RLP, to collect & share information/feedback and to reflect/improve on the ways we can assist this important population. Additional volunteers are now needed to enable us to add more Workshop facilitators and to expand the number of one-on-one relationships to fulfill student requests.

This is a subgroup of BJ's Refugee and Immigration Committee. When you join, we will also add you to the general list and encourage you to attend larger committee meetings. If you are interested in the Refugee and Immigration Committee but are undecided on your focus of interest, contact committee Co-Chair Elaine Klein, elainekleinteacher@gmail.com, to learn more.
